Superhero Reveal Party Field Trip

Introduction

In the early Fall of the 2021-2022 school year at Edgewood Jr/Sr High School, I founded the Cultural Diversity Club under the AP Human Geography and AP Capstone Research teacher, Mrs. Noah. I can guarantee that things have changed a lot since then! As well as keeping up with the musical, gastronomical, and similar activities we participated in last year, we now have even bigger projects planned for this year, many of which are already underway.

Superhero Suit-Up Campaign

For context, Candlelighters of Brevard is a nonprofit organization that helps children with cancer and their families emotionally and financially under my lovely mentor and company Executive Director Natasha Duran. I, personally, have known Mrs. Duran long before the establishment of my club. Still, just this year, my group and I received a special invitation to personally work with their families now that the immediate effects of the pandemic are finally over. This event, in particular, was the kickoff to Candlelighters’ month-long “Superhero Suit-Up Campaign,” in which a few special case children are chosen to pick a favorite superhero to act as for the night in order to show off their inner strength.

Superhero Reveal Party

For this event, 6 other club members and I left school at lunch to volunteer at the event at the grand “Premiere Theaters Oaks 10,” and it was even better than we could’ve imagined! First, we cheered for the kids and their families both on the red carpet and during the showing of their “movie trailers.” Then, humorously, we got many compliments from the staff on our yelling ability; I know, very surprising for a group of teenage girls. After this, we collected their autographs, served cupcakes, candy, and drinks, and played with the kids for hours until, sadly, the event had ended. Then, of course, we politely helped clean up and did not leave until everything was cleaned up, which I, as the group leader, was very proud to show off to Mrs. Duran.

Conclusion

In the end, although my Vice President, Marley Laughlin, and I had been planning this event for months, we never could’ve imagined it would go this positively; we will most definitely be attending this and other events in the future! Also, I am delighted to say that our group has received a certificate from the organization in which Mrs. Noah, my school’s administrators, and other community members and leaders, like the Equity and Diversity Officer of the county, felt much pride. We are all grateful and honored to have been considered one of Brevard County’s leading groups in the field of cultural diversity.
